Christmas is the time of year distance hurts the most. Everyone's posting family photos, and you're on a video call with a frozen screen, trying to watch someone you love open a gift you mailed two weeks ago.

Whether it's a partner in another city, a kid at college who can't afford the flight home, a parent across the country, or someone deployed overseas, the goal is the same. You want them to feel you there, even though you're not.

Here's what I'd send, and why it works.

Gifts that feel like you're in the room

Our signature gift

Hug From Afar Love Knot Necklace

The card reads "To the one I can't hold tonight." A love knot that can't be undone, worn every day as a reminder that distance doesn't change a thing.

Touch it, and theirs lights up

Long-distance friendship lamps

Wi-Fi lamps that glow on both ends when either of you touches yours. A tiny "I'm thinking of you" that doesn't need a text.

For a kid at college

College students are tougher than we give them credit for, but the first Christmas they can't come home stings. They don't need something expensive. They need proof that home is still home.

  • A care package of home. Their favorite snacks, a note from every family member, and something that smells like the house. My hug box formula walks you through it.
  • Open-when letters. "Open when you're homesick." "Open when finals are crushing you." Here's how to write them, with prompts.
  • A video-call ritual. Open gifts together on a call at the same time on Christmas morning. Free, and it's often the part they remember.

For someone deployed

Service members miss more Christmases than most of us ever will. A few practical things to know:

  • Military mail has earlier cutoffs. Packages to APO, FPO, and DPO addresses need to go out well before civilian holiday dates. Check the USPS holiday mailing page for military dates before you pack anything.
  • Pack light and durable. Jewelry, letters, photos, and soft goods travel well. Skip anything fragile or liquid-heavy.
  • Write more than you think you need to. Letters get reread for months. A few pages from you can outlast anything you buy.

I go deeper on this in the deployment care package guide.

For grandparents far away

Grandparents who can't travel often spend the holidays watching from a distance. A keepsake they can hold changes that.

Made for happy tears

To My Grandma Love Knot Necklace

A necklace she'll never take off, with a card that says what you've always felt.

For the grandchildren

To My Granddaughter necklaces

And going the other direction, gifts from a grandparent to the grandkids they can't hug this year.

℞Pharmacist's Note

Anticipation is part of the gift. Tell them something's on the way, and let them watch the tracking number for a few days. Looking forward to something from a person you love gives the brain's reward system something to hold onto, and when you're far apart, that waiting is a way of being together.

Count down together

If you'll be reunited after the holidays, make the wait visible. Our free Distance Countdown tool gives you a live countdown to your reunion date, plus a small daily idea for staying close until then.

Questions people ask

What's a good Christmas gift for a long-distance relationship?

Something they can touch every day that connects back to you: a message-card necklace like Hug From Afar, a pair of friendship lamps, or long-distance touch bracelets. Add a handwritten letter, which is often the part they keep.

When should I mail a long-distance Christmas gift?

For made-to-order necklaces, order by December 7. If you're mailing your own package within the lower 48, USPS recommends December 17 for Ground Advantage and December 18 for Priority Mail. Military addresses have earlier deadlines, so check USPS first.

How do you celebrate Christmas long distance?

Pick a time to open gifts together on a video call, watch the same movie at the same time, or cook the same recipe in both kitchens. Shared rituals do more than any single gift.
